The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is committed to excellence in educating the next generation of leaders in our field.

The mission of the department is to educate students through teaching and hands-on experience and prepare them for rewarding careers in the practice of civil and environmental engineering. The department will continue to offer unique opportunities enabled by our innovative research and teaching activities, geographic location in the Nation’s Capital, and active participation of diverse, high-quality faculty and students. The department will cultivate innovative thinkers with a global prospective afforded through unique international experiences that will allow our graduates to make an impact in society and engage in lifelong learning.

Vision

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will strive to achieve national and international recognition for innovative research and effective teaching methods in undergraduate and graduate education. Graduates will become global leaders in innovative planning and design of infrastructure to support sustainable water systems, built environments and intelligent transportation systems. The department will maintain a productive, collegial and collaborative environment for students, faculty and staff.
