Fall 2023 Department Highlights

Gabrielle Wood at 2024 AIChE Annual Meeting

Howard University chemical engineering junior Gabrielle Wood (pictured left) won first place for the Materials and Science Poster Competition at the 2023 American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ Annual Meeting.

Ayobami Ogundiran at the 2023 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting & Exhibit

Chemical engineering graduate student and member of the Biomolecular Assemblies and Nanomechanics Laboratory research group led by Preethi Chandran, Ph.D., Ayobami Ogundiran (pictured right) has published a research paper in the Journal of Virology titled “Shear-reversible clusters of HIV-1 in solution: stabilized by antibodies, dispersed by mucin.”

Ogundiran also presented a poster on this research topic for the Symposium on Biophysical and Soft Material at the 2023 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting & Exhibit. Displaying his artwork at the exhibit, Ogundiran qualified as a finalist in the Science as Art Competition.

Dr. Preethi Chandran

Howard University chemical engineering associate professor Preethi Chandran, Ph.D. was recently awarded an NSF grant for her research project, “Biophysical Study of Solution Behavior and Vulnerability of Viruses with Complex N-glycans”.

Chandran and her team of researchers aim to discover whether highly transmissible and mutable viruses such as influenza can be intercepted

based on their state of matter. A broader impact of the project will stem from developing a better understanding of disparities in virus transmission in different populations based on their state of matter.

Also this Fall, as one of the organizers of the Symposium on Hydrogels 1 at the 2023 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting & Exhibit, Chandran served as co-chair for the symposium.
