HUWEA Officially Chartered by WEF

Members of the Howard University Water Environment Association (HUWEA) were recognized by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) for HUWEA being officially chartered by WEF. The local member association of WEF, Chesapeake Water Environment Association (CWEA) held their board meeting on the Howard University campus on February 20. During this board meeting, CWEA President Aaron Z. Hughes presented civil and environmental engineering students Ayanna Butler-Hooker (HUWEA President) and Cameryn Burnette (HUWEA Vice-President), as well as Assistant Professor Jeseth Delgado Vela (HUWEA faculty advisor), with a plaque from WEF commemorating the charter from WEF.

HUWEA was formed as a student organization in the Spring of 2019 and officially recognized by both Howard University (HU) and WEF during the Fall of 2019. The mission of HUWEA is to serve as a resource for students interested in environmental and water issues across the HU community and to promote healthy water resource practices for the local area. To date, HUWEA has hosted panels featuring women leaders in the field, monthly campus clean ups, and "Come Get the Tea" events providing a forum for students to discuss environmental issues that are important to them. HUWEA has also hosted social events such as game nights and movie nights.

Receiving positive feedback from students, Howard University administration, and our WEF national and regional boards has been amazing. My hope is to continue our success.
