Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Design Studies
Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Design Studies | Undergraduate
Grounded in Howard University’s tradition of academic excellence and leadership, the Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Design Studies equips students to become innovative designers, critical thinkers, and future architects committed to addressing the evolving needs of society through the power of design.
The Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Design Studies (BSADS) at Howard University provides students with a strong foundation in architectural design, critical thinking, and the built environment while serving as the pre-professional pathway to the University’s NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program. Designed as the first stage of Howard’s innovative five-year professional architecture curriculum, the program combines rigorous coursework in architectural design, digital media, architectural history, structures, sustainability, and building technologies with community collaborations and a commitment to creativity, research, and social impact.
At the heart of the program are immersive design studios where students work individually and collaboratively to develop solutions to real-world challenges in an environment that reflects professional practice. Through hands-on learning, students build technical expertise, design skills, and a deep understanding of how architecture shapes communities and cultures. Students may also compete with collegiate teams from around the globe in competitions such as the BuildingsNEXT (formerly the Solar Decathlon) Student Design Competition.
The BSADS curriculum is intentionally structured to provide a seamless transition into the Master of Architecture program, creating a continuous educational pathway that culminates in a professional degree required for architectural licensure in most jurisdictions. Students benefit from a carefully sequenced curriculum that progressively builds knowledge and skills, preparing them for advanced research, thesis development, and professional practice.
