Department of Architecture Hosts ARE 5.0 Workshop with NOMA, NCARB and DCRA

The Department of Architecture hosted a workshop on the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) and the path to licensure, in collaboration with the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) on November 14, 2018. The workshop was facilitated by representatives of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and the District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) Board of Architecture, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture.

The workshop provided insight into the Architect Registration Exam (ARE) 5.0 and explored the new format and components of the exam, test taking strategies and pass rates, as well as associated fees. An overview of the path to licensure was also provided to help attendees understand the correlation between the ARE and the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP™) which is necessary to satisfy the required 3,740 hours of experience across six practice areas. An important aspect of the AXP is establishing an NCARB Record to report experience hours, which current students may begin while still in school.

The workshop covered a broad spectrum of topics to appeal to over 60 attendees who included current Howard architecture students, recent graduates, new professionals, and continuing professionals (those who are currently taking the ARE).

Special thanks to Professor Ronnie McGhee, who is the current chairman of the D.C. Board of Architecture, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture, for his efforts in bringing the collaborators together for the successful event. Professor McGhee also serves as the Educator Advisor for the Department of Architecture so that students can better understand the process from architecture education to examination.
