Ghasemi Wins the 2018 ASNE Student Paper Competition

Civil and Environmental Engineering Ph.D. student Hamid Ghasemi wins first place in the 2018 student paper competition of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) for his research titled “Atomistic Insight into Anti-Corrosion Role of Graphene as a Coating in Metals: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Approach”.

Ghasemi initially presented his research at MegaRust 2018 in San Diego, CA in May 2018 and was then invited to present a poster on his research at Technology Systems & Ships 2018 in Washington, D.C. in June 2018 for which he won first place.

This research paper was a part of Ghasemi’s doctoral research that focuses on developing a multiscale integrated design paradigm for composite materials and structures. Ghasemi has extensive research experience in computational nanomechanics and heat conduction in nanomaterials. His research contributions have been reflected in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Hessam Yazdani, who is also Ghasemi's doctoral advisor, comments on the research topic, “More than a decade after graphene's discovery, there are still challenges to overcome for the ‘wonder material’ to go mainstream.”
