Howard University civil engineering rising seniors Brooklynn Blackwell, Jordaina Hewitt, and Miles Davis received the prestigious American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Scholarship. Recent graduate William Hawkins was also recognized by the society as outstanding senior. The students were awarded at the 2024 Awards Banquet held by the ASCE National Capital Section.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has selected Howard University to lead a Tier 1 University Transportation Center through, building on the success of the existing Howard University Transportation Research Center, which is housed in the College of Engineering and Architecture.
In an ongoing effort to create enduring pipelines of diverse science talent and differentiated research, Amazon today announced a collaboration with Howard University, a historically Black college or university (HBCU) located in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1867, Howard is a research university comprised of 14 schools and colleges. As part of the collaboration, which will be housed in the College of Engineering and Architecture, Amazon will fund faculty research projects with an initial focus on machine learning and natural language processing.

Howard University civil engineering professor Lorraine Fleming has been elected to the Academy of Distinguished Alumni by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), University of California, Berkeley. She will be inducted at a banquet on the Berkeley campus on June 16, 2022. CEE faculty established the CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni in 2012. Among the objectives of the Academy are to honor the outstanding professional accomplishments and contributions of CEE alumni and to present Academy members to students as examples of successful CEE graduates and role models. The CEE Academy shines a light on the achievements of its graduates.

The Howard University team of engineering and architecture seniors, Howard’s Gateway, won the Director’s Award for the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2022 Design Challenge. The recipient of the Director’s Award is selected by the Solar Decathlon director to recognize a team who exhibited outstanding performance during the competition event and demonstrated passionate enthusiasm for affecting change through their participation in Solar Decathlon.

Howard University Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Ph.D. student Justin Drummond was recently selected as a recipient of the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF). According to NSF, the NSF Graduate Research Fellowships Program (GRFP) is a highly competitive fellowship program that “recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions.”

The Office of the Provost recently announced the appointment of alumna Kimberly L. Jones, Ph.D., (BSCE ‘90) as associate provost for faculty affairs. In her role, Dr. Jones will work directly with President Frederick and Provost Wutoh and advise on faculty academic matters, disciplinary actions, academic processes and procedures and other assigned responsibilities.
Howard University Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Jeseth Delgado Vela, Ph.D., was recently named a 2021 Early Career Research Fellow of the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM). During the two-year fellowship, Delgado Vela will study the changing ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico and its coastal zones.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Md Sami Hasnine leads the Amazon Transportation Services (ATS) funded Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) for cold chain implementation research at Howard University. The VIP framework fosters long-term faculty research-based team projects open to any student in any discipline. A vertical mentorship is practiced from the professor to undergraduate students through graduate students.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Stephen Arhin, Ph.D. recently had his research paper titled “Predicting Bus Travel Times in Washington, DC Using Artificial Neural Networks” featured in the newsletter for the Transportation Research Board. The research project was funded by the Federal Highway Administration through the University Transportation Research Centers with the Mineta Transportation Institute of San Jose State University selected to lead.
Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Assistant Professor Hessam Yazdani, Ph.D. recently received a 2021 National Capital Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE-NCS) Community Service Award and senior Kamau Sykes was recognized as Outstanding Graduating Senior. ASCE-NCS holds an annual awards ceremony to recognize and celebrate engineers and students who have demonstrated excellence and contributed to the civil engineering profession and the community.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Sophomores Jade Rutledge and Brandon Abraham recently published a paper titled “Mechanical Properties of C3N Nanotubes” in the peer-reviewed scientific journal in materials science Diamond and Related Materials. Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Hessam Yazdani, Ph.D. has received a $570,000 grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) to support research and education in advanced materials, water treatment and environmental chemistry, orthotics and prosthetics, and traumatic brain injury.
Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Claudia Marin, Ph.D., P.E. is leading a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Convergence Accelerator team to develop an Intelligent Surveillance Platform for Damage Detection and Localization of Civil Infrastructure. The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Dr. Marin a $760,000 grant over nine months for Phase I of a two-phased project through the NSF Convergence Accelerator program which is a highly competitive program designed to leverage a convergence approach to transition basic research and discovery into practice. Architecture Professor Bradford Grant will be contributing to the research alongside Dr. Marin.
Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Jeseth Delgado Vela is part of a team of researchers from North Carolina State University, Rice University and the University of Southern California who are collaborating on nationwide efforts to monitor SARS-CoV-2 viral particles in wastewater. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus responsible for causing COVID-19.
Civil and Environmental Engineering Seniors Travis Flowers, Grace Glenn, Darien Mercado, Binaya Paudel, Sigmund Skinner, Camille Wallace, and Alfred Wallfall placed second in the 2019 ACI Concrete Construction Competition, an international competition sponsored by the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
