Howard University engineering students were named student competition winners at the National Society of Black Engineer’s 50th annual convention. Chemical engineering rising sophomore Oluchi Emenike and electrical engineering rising sophomore Nathaniel Crosse won first place in the Let’s Debate: Generative AI Competition in which they debated the pros and cons of generative AI.

Howard University chemical engineering seniors Olabisi Bello and Dominic Davis recently received the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) National Capital Section’s (NCS) 2022 NCS Outstanding Student Award. The award recognizes students who exhibit outstanding academic achievements and potential in their chosen fields and who demonstrate a strong commitment to service to their department and/or to the chemical engineering profession.
Howard University chemical engineering senior Olabisi Bello, mechanical engineering senior Yaman Siwakoti and computer science senior Deante Taylor recently received prestigious Tau Beta Pi scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year. Scholarships are awarded annually by Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, to junior members on a competitive basis of high scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise of future contributions to the engineering profession.

Chemical Engineering Associate Professor Tao Wei, Ph.D. recently received a $400K NSF Grant for Cyber Training on Materials Genome Innovation for Computational Software (CyberMAGICS). The overall grant totals $1M for researchers at Howard University (HU) and the University of Southern California (USC). Prabitha Dev, Ph.D., associate professor of physics in the Howard University Department of Physics and Astronomy, will serve as co-PI to Dr. Wei.
Mechanical engineering senior Cheikh Badiane from the Howard University chapter of Engineers Without Borders joined community organizations to celebrate the Garden of Eden project in the city’s Ward 8 community – a series of raised garden beds enhancing the accessibility of gardening for seniors and those with limited mobility.

Howard University’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Amgen, one of the world’s leading independent biotechnology companies, have designed an innovative academic-industry partnership meant to greatly expand opportunities for underrepresented minorities in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The partnership takes the form of a fellowship for master’s-level graduate students and includes training in Amgen’s laboratories.
This year, the Department of Chemical Engineering, in collaboration with IPS-Integrated Project Services, was able to offer a unique multidisciplinary course titled Biopharmaceutical Facility Design. The course was open to juniors, seniors and graduate students in the College of Engineering and Architecture. Theodore (Ted) Cohen, a Project Manager at IPS, was able to join our department as an adjunct lecturer in chemical engineering and served as the lead instructor for the course. Cohen holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and a Master of Engineering Management from Rowan University.
Chemical Engineering Alumnus Jamel Ali, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemical and biomedical engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and National High Magnetic Field Laboratory partners with Patrick Ymele-Leki, Ph.D., interim chair and associate professor of chemical engineering on bacteria research funded by a total of over $1M in National Science Foundation grants. The pair were featured in a special issue of Chemical & Engineering News (c&en), a publication of the American Chemical Society (ACS), that celebrated 2021 Black Trailblazers in the chemical sciences and engineering.

Chemical Engineering Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies Preethi Chandran, Ph.D., received a $500K grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) through the Excellence in Research (EiR) program to study the biophysics of the shield of sugars (glycans) that typically covers pathogens.
The Heart of Tabitha Foundation partnered with Howard University Chemical Engineering Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies Preethi Chandran, Ph.D., and Catholic University Biomedical Engineering Associate Professor Otto Wilson, Ph.D., to continue offering its annual summer workshop for local high school students in a virtual setting. The workshop focused on college readiness and STEM careers and featured speakers from several professions.
Chemical Engineering Assistant Professor Solmaz Tabtabaei recently received a four-year $450K grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for her research on the classification of legumes and cereals for 3D food printing.
Chemical Engineering Assistant Professor Tao Wei recently received the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award for his research on multiscale simulations of metal oxide nanoparticle-protein electron transfer.
Chemical Engineering Sophomore Jordan Smith is passionate about climate change research and finding renewable energy solutions. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Smith made the move to Washington, D.C. after he was selected as a Howard University Bison STEM Scholar.
Chemical Engineering Junior Jamaka Thomas won second place in the Food, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology category at the 2018 Annual AIChE Meeting for her research submission titled: “Enrichment of Oat Protein by Means of Gravity and Electrostatic Forces.” Thomas co-authored her submission with Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Dinara Konakbayeva.
Chemical Engineering postdoctoral researcher Jyothirmai Simhadri was announced as the Post Doc/Resident/Fellow/Research Associate winner in the Physical Sciences and Engineering category for her research submission "Development of Shewanella Oneidensis MR-1 Biofilms for Iodate Reduction in Groundwater".
